Stimson: I'm not walking from Gills

By David Pritchard

Mark Stimson says there is “no chance” he will walk out on Gillingham despite a miserable run of results which have seen the club slip to the brink of League One's relegation zone.

A section of the club’s supporters have grown increasingly vocal in their criticism of the Gills boss in recent weeks. They again vented their anger on the full-time whistle after yesterday’s 4-0 defeat at Brentford, which saw the side fall to 20th place in League One after a run of one win in 11 games.

Stimson walked over to face the fans after the game but insisted he would not quit.

“No chance. I was brought up in the East End. You don’t walk for anyone, you face it eye-to-eye and you get on with it,” he said.

“It’s not something you want to hear as a manager but it happens. I’m probably not the only manager [on Saturday] to have that thrown at him around the country and that’s part of the job.

“I’ve always said I’ll do my best until the chairman tells me any different. He’s the one who will make that decision. It’s not happened to me yet but every manager is hired to be fired.”

Stimson’s focus is now on getting a result from a potentially critical game against fellow strugglers Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday night. The squad trained today (Sunday) in preparation for the game, although it was not in response to the result at Brentford as the session was scheduled before the weekend.

Tristan Plummer, who missed the Brentford trip with a twisted ankle, is definitely ruled out, but Rene Howe’s hip injury may have recovered in time.

No ... maybe not, but I bet you were the only manager to hear both the home and away fans sing it together!

Time to go Stimson .... you are not up to the job, admit you are out of your depth and move on!
