Schoolgirl injured in hit and run incident

KENT NEWS: A hit and run driver is being hunted by police after mowing down a teenage schoolgirl.

The motorist - thought to be driving a black Mercedes saloon car - hit the 15-year-old in Chaucer Road, Gillingham, at 12.30pm yesterday.

The girl was thrown into the air by the impact but amazingly walked away from the scene after only suffering cuts and bruises.

Patrol Officer PC George Shokar said: "It's extraordinary that the girl was not badly hurt in the collision, but she was obviously very shaken.

"We believe that the car involved was a black Mercedes, but we are unsure if it was being driven by a man or a woman.

"We would urge the driver of the car to come forward to help with our enquiries, or would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen something.

"I would also like to remind motorists that there is no right turn into Chaucer Avenue from Rainham road.

"A number of people are ignoring these signs and we will not hesitate in taking action against any motorist not following these rules.

"Motorists ignoring the no right turn are potentially putting people's lives at risk."

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact PC George Shokar at Medway Police station on 01634 792120.
