SIMON Royce became the first Gillingham player to pledge his future to the club following relegation to League Two.
The 36-year-old goalkeeper was arguably Gills’ most consistent performer last season and was rewarded for his efforts with a new one-year deal at Priestfield.
A new contract was originally mooted in January, but it has taken four months for the formalities to be agreed.
Gills boss Mark Stimson was delighted to finally secure Royce’s services for another season.
He said: “He’s going to be a vital player for us next season and one that we will need to help get this club back to where we want to be.”
Elsewhere Royce’s understudy Derek Stillie announced his retirement from the game.
The 34-year-old joined on a free transfer from Dundee United last summer but rarely featured until the last two months of the season when Royce was sidelined with an ankle injury.
The former Aberdeen and Wigan stopper has been studying for a law degree at the University of Medway and will now focus on a legal career.
Stimson said: “I would like to thank Derek for all his efforts for the club this season and wish him every success in his new career.”
