Hundreds of environmentalists and anti-poverty campaigners are due to descend on Kingsnorth to protest over plans for a new coal-fired power station at the site.
The ‘Mili-band’ demonstration, which will see the protestors form a human chain outside the plant, on Saturday has been led by a coalition of organisations including Oxfam and the Women’s Institute.
Organisers said they were calling on Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband to reject energy giant E.ON’s plans for a new coal-fired plant at the site on the Hoo Peninsular.
The protest is set to start at noon and last until 4pm. The ‘Mili-band’ will be formed at 12.15pm.
Later, the action will move to the Hoo Village Institute for a fete where entertainment will be provided by rockstar Sam Duckworth of Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and Ugandan world music star Geoffrey Oryema. Eastenders star Nina Wadia, who plays Zainab Masood, is set to compere the event.
The coalition is opposing dirty coal because of the devastating effect climate change is already having on poor people around the world.
Mr Miliband’s plans to test carbon capture and storage technology at any new coal plant would only stop 20 per cent of emissions.
A spokeswoman for Oxfam said: "Six million tonnes would still be pumped into the atmosphere every year, the equivalent of the total emissions of 25 developing countries."
The coalition, which also includes the RSPB and the Woodcraft Folk, believe the decision on Kingsnorth will show how serious the Government is on taking urgent action in cutting emissions and avoiding climate change.
