Crusaders make Betts new captain

Medway Park Crusaders have appointed Sam Betts as the new captain after the experienced forward agreed to re-sign for next season.

The newly re-named club, formerly Kent Crusaders, offered Betts the role after previous incumbent Pete Ayling stepped down after two seasons. The new skipper has spent three seasons with the club and made big improvements to his game last season, when he was voted as player of the season by his team-mates.

Head coach Mads Olesen said: “Sam is someone you can trust to come out and give a steady performance game after game. He’s not afraid to step up and take responsibility either. Be that responsibility of taking the big shots or making defensive stops, or the responsibility of letting his team-mates know if they’re not performing well enough. That’s exactly the qualities you’re looking for in a captain”.

Betts takes over at a crucial time at the club, which is moving from Canterbury to new facilities at Medway Park. There will also be expectation on the squad to challenge for promotion after they achieved their highest ever position in Division Two with a fifth place finish last season.

Betts said: “I'm very excited to be back with Crusaders for my fourth year, especially with the move to Medway Park which should be one of the top venues for basketball in the country. I will be sad to leave Canterbury, but I hope the loyal fans will make the trip up the mM to carry on their fantastic support. I look forward to playing to a packed house in our first game at Medway Park.”
